SNK FSP-120v 5-axis Vertical Machine Center

Ballscrew Guys was called in to do X-Axis and Y-Axis service to Shin Nippon Koki SNK FSP-120v 5-axis profiler vertical machine center (VMC). This thing is a beast, weighing in at over 90,000 lbs. We will be straightforward with you. This machine is challenging from a mechanical standpoint. It takes some serious mechanical surgery to access and refurbish all the ball screws. Because of this, this job requires more man hours than most of our other machine center services.

Ball screw service on a Shin Nippon Koki SNK FSP-120v 5-Axis profiler vertical machine center (VMC). It is no exaggeration to state that everything about servicing the end bearings and ball screws on this machine is a pain in the ass. This is an image underneath the milling head tower. The ball screw assembly is encased in a yoke mounting system where the bolts are nearly unreachable. To make things worse, there are machined alignment pins which have to be removed as well to facilitate removal of the ball screw mounting yoke. This image is visually interesting as it has a mirror reflection of lubrication oil under the ball screw assembly.

Shin Nippon Koki SNK FSP-120v 5-Axis Profiler Vertical Machine Center (VMC) ball screw service. This is the ball screw assembly from underneath the machining tower. Believe referred to as the Y-Axis. Removing the ball nut yoke was required to create access for ball screw service. This was not an easy task by any means, but Ballscrew Guys were able to get it done.

We have done quite a few Shin Nippon Koki machine tools over the decades, some of which are shown here on the Ballscrew Guys gallery page. One consistent thing we have found with almost all SNK machines we service: The assembly technicians set their torque wrenches to “ridiculous.” The sheer number of foot-pounds or Newton-meters put on SNK ball screws is insane. This SNK FSP-120v 5-Axis profiler vertical machine center (VMC) is no different. Here is the picture of one of the wrenches destroyed in service of an SNK machine.
